OVERVIEW

The Berczy Village is a neighbourhood in Markham, Ontario, Canada. Major Mackenzie Drive lies to the north, McCowan Road lies to the east, 16th Avenue lies to the south, and Kennedy Road lies to the west. This area is located north of Unionville. William Berczy, Markham's founder, gave the area its name.

HISTORY

An Ontario Heritage Trust Plaque located east off Kennedy Road, north of 16th Avenue pays tribute to the German settlers who were brought to this area in 1794 by their leader William Berczy. These pioneers were the first residents in Markham Township. Despite sickness and famine these hardy families laid the foundations for prosperous agricultural development and the future residential development of many Markham neighbourhoods.
