OVERVIEW
Buttonville is primarily known for its municipal airport, which occupies a huge area of land just east of Highway 404. The majority of residential development in today's Buttonville neighbourhood occurs on both the west and east sides of Woodbine Avenue, north of the Rouge River.
HISTORY
The first settler in this area was Major John Button who formed a volunteer cavalry brigade in Upper Canada and was rewarded for his loyalty to the crown with a 200 acre land grant in what is now Buttonville. The hamlet grew around a complex of mills that operated on the banks of the Rouge River. Farming was popular with the first settlers to this area and soon ancillary businesses like a general store and blacksmith and a wagon shop were opened.
